NEW RECORDS OF TURTLES (REPTILIA: TESTUDINES: CRYPTODIRA) FROM THE LATE PLEISTOCENE OF ENTRE RÍOS PROVINCE, ARGENTINA

Recent findings of two fossil turtles coming from the Salto Ander Egg Formation (SAEF) are reported. The SAEF outcrops at SW Entre Ríos Province and is composed of fluvial deposits referred to the Late Pleistocene, with ages ranging from 120 to 60 ky. Faunistic associations recovered from the SAEF allowed discriminating two biostratigraphic units: One of them, with Brazilian fauna, is linked to the basal sequences (SS1). The other, exhibiting Pampean affinities, corresponds to middle and upper levels (SS2–SS3). Both new specimens are referred to living taxa based on the shape and proportions of their bony plates and scutes sulci: CICYTTP-PV-R-3-397 specimen consists of right and left associated epiplastra and hyoplastra, with portions of the bridge peripherals. It is assigned to Trachemys cf. dorbigni (Emydidae), the Dorbigny’s slider which nowadays inhabits freshwater from SE Brazil, Uruguay and NE Argentina. CICYTTP-PV-R-3-401 specimen, an almost complete carapace lacking the plastron, belongs to Chelonoidis cf. chilensis (Testudinidae), the Chacoan or Argentine tortoise. At present, the species of the “subgroup chilensis” inhabit terrestrial dry environments from SW Bolivia, W Paraguay, and NW Argentina reaching to N Patagonia. From a paleoenvironmental point of view, these new records are congruent with previously hypothesized scenarios based on sedimentological, lithological and paleontological evidences: Trachemys cf. dorbigni comes from the same levels (SS1) as Chelonoidis denticulata, the yellow-footed tortoise of northern wet tropical forests of South America; whereas Chelonoidis cf. chilensis comes from the same sequences (SS2–SS3) as the more arid-adapted extinct giant forms of Chelonoidis.
